Abstract:

Period characterized by the appearance of public debt in Serbia today is tied to the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, where the struggle for independence caused an increase in Serbia’s external debt. It is believed that government borrowing from the National Bank as old as the institution of the National Bank. In fact, even before the opening of the counters themselves the National Bank of Serbia made the national debt by approving a loan of 304,216 dinars in gold, on a backing of state vouchers. This is done first business transactions of the Bank, which was made prior to the start of regular operations.
